About Nierbeck

Anka Nierbeck is a London based visual artist who uses a variety of mediums, such as acrylic, oil paint, graphite or pens, to create a fantasy world with anthropomorphised animals and part-human creatures (which she refers to as Visual Fables).

Inspired by surrealist painters such as Remedios Varo, Leonora Carrington, and the dark art of Alfred Kubin and Goya, Nierbeck uses symbolism to depict her internal world, a vehicle for her own process of individuation, as described by C.G. Jung, through which she attempts to integrate her conscious and unconscious minds.

Born and raised in Barcelona, Spain, but of German and Italian heritage, Anka Nierbeck initially trained as a Fashion Designer at Istituto Marangoni in Milan and at Escola d’Art Illa in Barcelona. In 2011 she decided to make London her home, where she has been living and working since.

Visual Fables

“Fables are short stories that feature anthropomorphised animals to convey a moral truth.
I make visual fables to tell my story. Inspired by Jung’s concept of the archetypes and the collective unconscious, with a particular interest on that of the child and the shadow, I use visual fables as a vehicle to explore my own process of individuation, in an attempt to integrate the conscious and the unconscious, the shadow and the ego, the child and the persona.”
